What the LG warranty actually covers

LG appliance warranties include a 1-year standard term on parts and labor plus extended component coverage: up to 10 years on the linear/inverter compressor (parts only) and 5 years on the sealed system for refrigerators. LG washing machines include a 10-year motor warranty on models with the direct-drive inverter motor. These component warranties are the most valuable parts of LG's coverage and worth citing explicitly when filing a claim.

LG is a Korean manufacturer with a strong US service network. The linear compressor technology carries the extended warranty because LG has high confidence in its failure rate — a genuine engineering claim. Non-authorized repairs void both the standard and extended component warranties entirely.

How to file an LG warranty claim

  1. Find your proof of purchase

Locate the receipt, order confirmation, or card statement showing the purchase date — coverage is measured from it.

  2. Locate the model & serial number

Usually on a label on the unit, in the manual, or in your online account. LG support will ask for it first.

  3. Contact LG through an official channel

Use the support number or claim form on their official site — not third-party sellers — so your claim is on record with the manufacturer.

  4. Document everything

Save case numbers, names, dates, and photos of the defect. A clear paper trail resolves disputes faster.

  5. Escalate if needed

If a valid claim stalls, ask for a supervisor and reference your statutory rights as a consumer (see our warranty types guide).

Repair or replace your LG? A quick rule of thumb

The common guidance: if the repair costs more than half the price of a new unit, or the unit is past ~75% of its expected lifespan, replacement usually wins. For major sealed-system or compressor failures out of warranty, repairs can run $400–$1,000+, which often tips toward replacing — but always get a diagnosis first.

When the warranty ends

Out of warranty or claim denied? Here's how to think through the options — ranked by what usually makes financial sense first.

Repair it

Get a diagnosis first. Many LG parts are DIY-replaceable and a quote often costs nothing.
